The Angel Gabriel
The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came
This carol is also known as Gabriel’s Message and is a Basque folk carol with the melody Angelus ad Virginem from the 13th century. The original words were in Latin but the Basque title was Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen. The Basque words were adapted into English by Sabine Baring-Gould(1834 – 1924), a writer who spent a winter in the Basque country as a boy and this adaptation by Danielle derives from the arrangement by Edgar Pettman which is the most commonly heard version of this carol, published in 1892 in Modern Christmas Carols. It tells the story of the annunciation to the shepherds as told in Luke chapter 1 verses 26 -28 and also alludes to the Magnificat of Mary (Luke chapter1 verses 46–55).
1 The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
With wings as drifted snow, with eyes as flame:
“All hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary,
Most highly favoured lady.” Gloria!
2 “For know a blessed mother thou shalt be,
All generations laud and honor thee;
Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold,
Most highly favoured lady.” Gloria!
3 Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head;
“To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said.
“My soul shall laud and magnify God’s holy name.”
Most highly favoured lady.” Gloria!
4 Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born
In Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn,
And Christian folk through-out the world will ever say:
“Most highly favoured lady.” Gloria!
