Merry Christmas!

Xmas tree

Danielle & Dave's Advent Calendar, 2024

13th December, 2023

2 Basque Carols from Kuttun Kantak:
Give me this Christmas night, O lovely Christmas Star

words by Lourdes Zubeldia (b.1923) and English text by Bob Chilcott arranged by Javier Busto (b.1949)

adapted for harp by Danielle Perrett

Before I write anything else, I have to share my mirth with you a moment ago when I correctly
typed the work’s name here and spell check changed it to Kitten Can Attack!

Actually, Kuttun Kantan translates as Night Songs. In fact, there are three of these,
but I have only selected two for this Advent Calendar.

Lourdes Zubeldia was herself a composer but also a literary author. This was not her only collaboration with Javier Busto as they also have a work called Maria Maialen to their names published in 1998.
Javier Busto (Sagrado) is well known beyond the Basque region for his sacred choral music which is published internationally and he also adjudicates compositions and choirs across the world.

These arrangements are taken from World Carols for Choirs which describes these two songs here as ‘a prayer in irregular metre; and a song of rejoicing.’

Around Christmas there are many festivals in the Basque region and what would a good festival be without a good procession? So carols are sung on these processions around the streets. The irregular metre of the first of these carols here reflects the natural rhythm of the language, a common feature of Basque carols together with a more church orientated style to the music.

Give me this Christmas Night

Gida nazu Gau ona oskarbi zeruan
Haur eder horreganaia zer nahi duanan.
Ez nau beldurtzen hotzak eztaere nekeak,
Bero dukat bihotza aurkitu arten.

Give me this Christmas night a light to guide my way,
To see the Child of beauty there where he lay.
I cannot fear the cold or the journey through the wild.
My heart so warm will lead me to meet the newborn Child.

O Lovely Christmas Star

Gabon izar eder poztu nauzu bihotza
Oihuz noa alaitzera txirul txirulaz.
Alleluia!

Atabal doinua txalapartana ere
gizadia kutsatuz pake pozez.
Alleluia!

Izar eder ez sekulan gorde
ilunauxa dezagun abestuz ere.
Alleluia!

O lovely Christmas star with your light you fill the sky.
To the gentle sounds of music raise your voices high.
Alleluia!

The sound of flute and drum, and the instruments we find,
They will bring their joy and gladness here to all humankind.
Alleluia!

O lovely Christmas star forever thing bright,
We will chase away the darkness singing in your light
Alleluia!

So for all cat lovers amongst you, and even those who are frightened of kittens, here with love is today’s offering!

Performed on David Opera model concert harp, 2000,
with square ethnic drum picked up somewhere on our travels and played by my teddy bear (assisted by Dave) as his paw had the kind of sound for which we were looking – human hand did not cut it for us….!
