Sweet Bells

composer: Lucy Bunce

I became harp teacher at King’s College School  some years back when Lucy was assistant Head of Music there. She went on to become a dear and generous friend.

Lucy has been much more than a teacher in her musical career; She is Director of Music at St Andrew’s, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge. She is studying (online) for an MLitt in the Bible and Contemporary World at St Andrew’s University.

Lucy sings beautifully and accompanies herself at the same time on the harp and believe me, that takes some doing! Her arrangements and songs  radiate her Christian faith. They are really imaginative and oh, so tuneful!

So much so, that Songs of Praise featured her song ‘Bless the Hands that Bless’ in one of their programmes 2021 which showed support and gratitude to all the NHS medics who steered us through the horrendous Covid pandemic. If you were not lucky enough to hear the song back then you can listen on YouTube or watch the programme [see references at the bottom of the page].

So here in homage and thanks to Lucy and in order to share her lovely creativity and generosity with you all is this delightful ear worm.

While shepherds watched their flocks by night all seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down and glory shone around

[Chorus]
Sweet bells, sweet chiming Christmas Bells
Sweet bells, sweet chiming Christmas Bells
They cheer us on our heavenly way, sweet chiming bells

“Fear not,” said he, for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled minds
“Clad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind”

[Chorus]

“To you in David’s town this day is born of David’s line
The Savior who is Christ the Lord
And this shall be the sign”

[Chorus]
Sweet bells, sweet chiming Christmas Bells
Sweet bells, sweet chiming Christmas Bells
They cheer us on our heavenly way, sweet chiming bells
They cheer us on our heavenly way, sweet chiming bells

Played on Aoyama Musa harp.
