JOB OVERVIEW: Upper School Counselor

Under the guidance of the Head of Upper School and the supervision of the Director of Student Counseling Services, the full-time Upper School Counselor supports the students in grades 8-12 in their social, emotional, and academic development. With empathy and understanding, this individual will have a strong presence in the Upper School through direct work with students, collaboration with teachers, provision of learning support, and partnership with families.

Chapin’s next Upper School Counselor will be:

An individual who demonstrates a commitment to comprehensive and integrated social and emotional programming who

  • Uses evidence-based practices and research to inform decisions and programming that support the social-emotional wellness of all Upper School students
  • Partners with the Upper School Deans and Counseling & Health Department to support the Upper School Health & Wellness curriculum
  • Recognizes the importance of integrating social and emotional learning in all aspects of students’ lives at school and supports students via participation in classroom teaching, small group, and one-on-one meetings as needed
  • Acts as a resource to advisors and a collaborator in the ongoing development of the Upper School Advisory Program

A student-centered educator and practitioner who values each student’s voice, experience, and history who

  • Possesses a deep understanding of adolescent development and approaches work with young people joyfully
  • Models an appreciation for student wellness and the connection between emotional health and intellectual wellbeing
  • Is skilled in determining appropriate next steps for a variety of situations, whether working proactively or responsively, and approaches with a restorative lens
  • Identifies the individual, classroom, and grade-wide social-emotional trends and needs of students, so as to design appropriate interventions and supports

An individual who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by

  • Building strong, intentional relationships with students, families, and Professional Community members through individual interactions, classroom teaching, participation in divisional activities, and community events
  • Engaging regularly in work to deepen cultural competence and proficiency to better understand and serve a diverse community
  • Prioritizing continuous examination of own biases with respect to student diversity, equity, and inclusion

A partner to students, their families, and colleagues in the social-emotional needs of Upper School students who

  • Works with the community in an understanding, confidential, and supportive manner
  • Provides guidance and support to parents around adolescent development and issues related to mental health
  • Establishes and maintains connections with outside providers and manages individual crisis intervention

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master’s or Doctoral Degree in School Counseling or School Psychology
  • Two or more years of experience with 13-18 year-olds
  • Commitment to DEIB/Culturally Responsive Practice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred

  • Experience in a high school setting
  • Experience delivering social-emotional learning curriculum
  • Experience with restorative practices

Salary will be commensurate with experience with a range of $90,000 - $130,000.
