Coordinator Facility Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement

Position Overview
This position is responsible for extensive collaboration/coordination between coding and clinical documentation specialist teams to improve the quality and completeness of clinical documentation of care provided at United Health Services. Provide education to coding, clinical documentation staff and providers to improve documentation and query assignment, develop education based on, industry performance, regulatory focus areas and observed opportunities within United Health Services Hospitals.
Essential Functions
Essential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Utilizes comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM coding guidelines and clinical knowledge to educate coding, cdi and provides on best practice principals.
- Provides educational in-service to coding and CDI staff related to DRG’s. Remains up to date on DRG system literature from AHIMA and CDIS. Possesses knowledge, understanding of MS DRG and APR DRG’s.
- Reviews potential DRG assignments for accuracy. Provides timely feedback of all DRG reassignments.
- Demonstrates ability to relate coding changes accurately and efficiently to staff.
- Demonstrates an understanding of complications, co-morbidities, severity of illness, risk of mortality, and reports findings to Director of Coding/CDI.
- Demonstrates proficiency in computer usage, including database, spreadsheet, and internet usage.
- Maintains excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team to influence change.
- Recognizes opportunities for documentation improvement using strong critical-thinking skills. Uses critical thinking and sound judgement in decision-making, regularly ensuring compliance and appropriate documentation and coding capture according to coding guidelines.
- Collaborates effectively with Coding and CDI Supervisors to ensure documentation and coding requirements are met to capture appropriate ICD coding and DRG assignment.
- Provides coding/CDI audits for DRG optimization.
Position Requirements
Education/Experience
Minimum Required:
- CCS, RHIT, CPC, CCA CCDS or CDIP certification with an associate degree.
- Five years' coding experience.
Preferred:
- Five years' experience in auditing/coding with preferred knowledge in CDI regulatory compliance.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
License/Certification
Minimum Required:
- CCS or RHIT, or CPC, CCS-P, or CCA or CCDS or CDIP
