Description:
This position is a member of an eight-person crew that will conduct timber assessments on federal lands in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The crew will be led by a permanent forester and will collect basal area (timber stand density) data using variable-radius plots and handheld GPS. On-the-job training will be provided. Normal work hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday with a 30 minute lunch break.
General Requirements:
The ideal candidate for this position will have basic knowledge or experience in forestry or a related natural resource profession which involves data collection. The candidate should be a self-starter and can work under light general supervision. The candidate should have a working knowledge of geographic information systems such as ArcGIS.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:

forest management practices;

record keeping;

handheld GPS operation;

orienteering.
Skills:
-
operate 4-wheel drive vehicle in off highway conditions;

operate GPS to navigate and create waypoints;
-
locate and navigate to points using GPS, compass, topographic maps and aerial photographic maps;

measure tree heights, diameters, and basal area;
-
properly enter data into a data recorder.
Ability to:
-
do repetitive strenuous work outdoors in all kinds of weather and conditions;
-
perform assignments with limited instruction;
-
interpret maps and aerial imagery;
-
hike with a 20 pound pack for extended periods in arduous terrain and varying weather conditions.
This position will be required to use a variety of forestry tools and equipment. Therefore, this position should have the skill to use: diameter tapes, angle gauges, Biltmore stick, data recorders, compass, and global positioning systems.
This position must be able to:

drive a 4-wheel drive truck in a variety of weather conditions.

use forestry tools for measuring purposes;

use and interpret topographic maps and aerial photography;

deal tactfully with others;

communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

work independently with minimal supervision, or with a group in a team setting;

use forestry tools: angle gauge, Biltmore stick, diameter tape, compass, GPS, data recorders
