Mary's Boy Child

Jester Hairston (1901-2000)

Originally released as a single by Harry Belafonte in 1956, this chart topping Christmas song has had many different cover versions over the years. It reached number 1 again in the UK charts and those of several other countries in the 1970s in a version by Boney M.

Jester Hairston studied at the Julliard School of Music and was an expert on Spirituals and composed 300 himself.
He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame because of all the film and TV music which he wrote and he was a goodwill ambassador for the US State Department.

This song tells the story of the birth of Jesus and how that has brought salvation to the world.

Long time ago in Bethlehem
So the Holy Bible say
Mary’s boy child, Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas day

Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new king born today
And man will live forevermore
Because of Christmas day

Trumpets sound and angels sing
Listen what they say
That Man will live forevermore
Because of Christmas day

While shepherds watched their flocks by night
Them see a bright new shining star
Them hear a choir sing
The music seemed to come from afar

Now, Joseph and his wife, Mary
Come to Bethlehem that night
Them find no place to born she child
Not a single room was in sight

Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new king born today
And man will live forevermore
Because of Christmas day

Trumpets sound and angels sing
Listen what they say
That Man will live forevermore
Because of Christmas day

By and by, they find a little nook
In a stable all forlorn
And in a manger cold and dark
Mary’s little Boy was born

Long time ago in Bethlehem
So the Holy Bible say
Mary’s boy child, Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas day

Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new king born today
And man will live forevermore
Because of Christmas day

Trumpets sound and angels sing
Listen what they say
That Man will live forevermore
Because of Christmas day
